Sump Pump Storm-Readiness Checklist

The test takes about ten minutes: look in the pit, pour water in until the float lifts, listen for a clean start and stop, then walk outside and confirm water is leaving the discharge.

Run it before storm season, not when the radar is already green.

Storm-ready means five things at once

Clear pit, free float, a motor that starts and stops on its own, water actually leaving the discharge, and something covering the pump when the power fails. Four out of five is a wet basement waiting for the right storm.

Is the pump storm-ready, or just quiet?

Storm-ready means five things are true at the same time, and you have checked them recently instead of assuming them.

  • The pit is clear and the intake is not buried in silt.
  • The float moves freely through its full travel.
  • The motor starts, moves water, and stops on its own.
  • Water actually leaves the discharge, away from the foundation.
  • Something covers the pump when the power fails — a backup, a generator, or at minimum an alarm and a plan.

Know the five parts before you test anything

Find and label each piece now, while the pit is dry and the light is good.

  • The basin (pit) — the hole in the floor where groundwater collects.
  • The pump — either a submersible sitting under the water or a pedestal with the motor above it.
  • The float switch — the tethered ball, vertical rod, or sealed column that tells the pump to start.
  • The check valve — a bulge on the vertical pipe above the pump that stops water falling back.
  • The discharge line — the pipe that leaves the pit and exits through the wall or rim joist.
  • The power supply — the outlet the pump plugs into and the breaker that feeds it.
  • The backup, if any — a second pump, a battery, an alarm, or nothing.

Write the brand, horsepower, and rough age on a card taped to a nearby joist. That card saves ten minutes on the worst day of the year.

A safe pre-storm test you can run yourself

Test the pump with water, not with your hand. Pouring water in reproduces what a storm does; lifting the float with your fingers only proves the switch closes, and it puts your hand in a pit with an energized pump.

  1. Clear the area — dry footing, a working light, nothing stored on the pit lid.

  2. Confirm power — pump plugged into its own outlet, cord undamaged, breaker on, GFCI not tripped.

  3. Look in the pit — intake visible, no gravel, silt, drywall dust, or debris.

  4. Pour water in slowly with a bucket, down the side of the basin, until the float rises.

  5. Listen — a clean start and a steady motor tone, not a hum, grind, or rattle.

  6. Watch the level fall and confirm the pump shuts off by itself, untouched.

  7. Step outside while it runs and confirm water is leaving the discharge point.

Run a second bucket if the first cycle is too short to judge. Two clean cycles tell you more than one.

A bucket test is a pass/fail on obvious faults. Capacity, endurance, and cold-weather behavior are not things a bucket can measure.

Checking the float and the pit without defeating the switch

The float is the most common reason a healthy pump does nothing. It rarely needs adjusting — it needs room.

  • Confirm the float swings clear of the basin wall, the pipe, and the power cord.
  • Look for a zip tie or cord clip someone added; a tethered float restrained at the wrong height is a stuck float.
  • Never wedge, tape, or tie a float open to “keep the pump running.” That is how a motor burns out.
  • Unplug the pump before removing debris, and never reach into standing water to unplug anything.
  • If the pit has a sealed lid and a vent pipe, it is probably a sewage ejector rather than a sump. Leave it closed and ask which unit you have before anyone works on it.

Follow the discharge line all the way to the end

Water leaves the discharge or it does not — the pump has no opinion. Most “it runs but the pit stays full” problems end outdoors.

  • Find where the pipe exits the house, then find where it ends.
  • Confirm water runs out freely during the test rather than trickling or backing up.
  • Look for a crushed section, a pulled joint, or damage from mowing and frost heave.
  • Check that the outlet is not buried in mulch, sod, leaves, or a nest.
  • Confirm the water runs away from the house instead of pooling at the wall or soaking back into the drain tile.
  • In cold months, check the last few feet. A discharge ending in a low spot can freeze into a plug and stay frozen for weeks, and a blocked line makes a good pump look broken.

One rule is not optional

Sump pumps, foundation drains, and downspouts cannot be tied into the sanitary sewer: the City states those connections are explicitly prohibited by plumbing codes and city ordinance, because the extra water worsens backups during rain events (City of Blue Springs FAQ). If you inherited an older connection, ask the City rather than leaving it in place.

Where the water goes after that is still yours to manage. The City says homeowners and homeowners associations are responsible for maintaining the drainage way on their property (City of Blue Springs FAQ). A discharge that floods the neighbor’s yard is a dispute, not a fix.

Short cycling, thumping, and what the check valve is telling you

Rapid cycling means the pump switches on and off every few seconds instead of running a normal cycle, and the usual reason is water falling back into the pit through a check valve that is not seating.

  • A thump after shutoff — the water column dropping until the valve closes. Common, but worth watching if it gets louder.
  • The level rising again right after a cycle — a valve letting pumped water return.
  • On-off-on within seconds — cycling that wears out a motor quickly.
  • Motor running with nothing leaving outside — a blockage between the pump and the outlet, or an impeller that has given up.

Power, GFCI, backup batteries, and alarms

Here is the plainest fact about basements: the storm that fills the pit is often the same storm that takes the power out, and a pump with no electricity is not a pump. That is why an outage, not a worn-out motor, is behind so many wet basements.

  • The pump should have its own outlet, not share a circuit with a freezer or a shop vac.
  • Extension cords and daisy-chained power strips are a failure point in a wet room.
  • Press the GFCI test and reset buttons so you know they work. One trip is information; a second trip means stop and have it checked.
  • Know which breaker feeds the pump, so nobody switches it off mid-project and forgets.

Do you need a battery backup? If losing the basement matters — finished space, stored belongings, a furnace on the floor — then yes, or something equivalent. If the pump runs a few times a year over bare concrete, an alarm and a plan may be enough. Decide on the consequence of failure, not on the pump.

Backups do not maintain themselves. Put the battery date on that same card.

Before you leave town in storm season

A pump failing in an empty house is the expensive version, and this list is different from winterizing.

Before you go

  • Run the bucket test within a week of leaving.
  • Confirm the pit is clear and the outdoor outlet is open.
  • Test the backup and note the battery’s age.
  • Leave the pump’s breaker on, and say so to anyone working in the house.
  • Give a neighbor a key and show them the pit and the alarm.
  • Put a water sensor on the floor if the basement is finished.

Warning signs the pump will not survive a long storm

Most pumps pass a ten-second test and fail a six-hour storm. These are the signs that show up under load.

  • It takes noticeably longer to clear the pit than it did last season.
  • The casing runs hot, or the motor tone changes partway through a run.
  • The breaker holds through short cycles but trips during long ones.
  • The pit refills nearly as fast as it empties in ordinary rain.
  • Nobody remembers when it was installed.

Two of those together is worth an inspection before the season rather than during it. Run hours matter more than the calendar, but both count.

Water is rising and the pump is not running

Check whether the house has power before assuming the pump is broken. In a widespread outage, a perfectly good pump is simply unpowered, and the answer is a generator or a backup rather than a repair.

  1. Stay out of standing water near outlets, cords, and the panel.

  2. Check the lights. House dark and pump silent points at power, not plumbing.

  3. Check the GFCI and breaker only if the panel and the floor are dry and safely reachable.

  4. Stop optional water use so nothing extra reaches the pit or the floor drain.

  5. Move belongings up and photograph the water level.

  6. Leave and call for help if you smell burning, see sparking, or water nears outlets.

Where plumbing repair stops and water extraction begins

These are separate trades, and the pump normally gets fixed first. A plumber restores the system that removes water; extraction companies remove what already came in.

  • Plumbing: pump testing, repair or replacement, float and check-valve work, discharge piping.
  • Electrical: a dedicated circuit, a replaced outlet, or GFCI work.
  • Extraction and drying: standing water, wet carpet, saturated drywall, dehumidification.
  • Restoration and remediation: flooring, finishes, mold work, and contents.

How often should a sump pump be checked?

Twice a year at minimum, plus a quick cycle before any forecast storm and one after. Spring and fall suit most households: one check before the wet season, one before freezing weather can plug the discharge. If the pit runs often, or the basement is finished, check monthly during the wet months.

Why does my sump pump run but not remove water?

Because the water is not leaving, or it is coming back. The usual causes are a blocked, frozen, crushed, or disconnected discharge line, a check valve stuck open, or an impeller that no longer moves water. Confirm outside first: if nothing exits the outlet while the motor runs, the problem is downstream of the pump.

What does rapid cycling mean?

It means the pump starts and stops within seconds instead of running a full cycle. Water is usually falling back into the pit through a check valve that is not seating, though a float set too low or an oversized pump in a small basin can also do it. Cycling wears a motor out quickly, so it is worth diagnosing early.

Do I need a battery backup?

That depends on what a failure would cost you, not on the pump. Can I test the pump by lifting the float by hand?

It is better not to. Lifting the float only proves the switch closes at that point, and it puts your hand into a pit beside an energized pump. Pouring water in reproduces real conditions, tests the float at its true trigger height, and lets you watch the shutoff too. If you must inspect the float, unplug the pump first.

Will the discharge line freeze, and does it matter?

Yes, and it matters more than most people expect. A line ending in a low spot, a snow drift, or a shaded run can freeze into a plug that stays for weeks, and a plugged line makes a healthy pump useless. Is it a problem if the pump never runs at all?
