What a drain snake or auger is designed to do
A cable machine bores a path through the blockage and cuts or drags it apart. Municipal cleaning guidance describes rotating blades that break up grease deposits, cut roots, and loosen debris (EPA).

What hydro jetting is designed to remove
High-velocity water removes debris and grease build-up, clears blockages, and cuts roots within small-diameter pipes (EPA). Its real advantage over a cable is that it takes material off the wall instead of through it.
- A kitchen branch coated with cooled fat.
- Soap, lint, and hair sludge on a bathroom or laundry run.
- Grit and silt that a cable only loosens.
- Fine root hair at a joint, where the wall must also come clean.
- A line being prepared for lining or for a baseline recording.

When combining tools may be justified
Combining is justified when each tool answers a question the previous one raised, not when three services arrive as a package.
